An ancient living oak nestled in undergrowth

A3 pencil & charcol drawing

Review

"The artist observes and records beauty in the least likely of places, such as the oily grey mud and waters of a London river where a frond of seaweed drifts by and occasional vivid colours of a passing blue buoy or a red balloon. Industrial shapes of cranes and gas works emerging from fogs of silvers, golds and greys. He includes a passing helicopter, seagulls chatter and a plane as soundtrack for his gentle observation. In his etchings the contrasts are dramatic in a different way, the mountains and cliffs of Ireland stand against the tactile softness of wet sand and seaweed or the luminosity of sea and sky. In Dreamfields he has used double exposure on film to create ghostly landscape images. I get the impression of an artist who is sharply observant, but find no hint of criticism in what he observes, only a patient watchfulness. His work can be hypnotically serene." JUDY RUSSELL - POET

Continuing the truncated trees theme a recent visit to Shorne Woods meeting and photographing skeletal and sculptural trees provides the material for this charcoal, graphite, and pencil drawing in progress. Part of my personal geography and orthopaedic journey, truncated and twisted trees speak to me of the dynamic relationship between us and nature and the ways in which we represent this relationship.

This ancient oak of Lullingstone woods is nestled on chalk down land in the Darenth Valley, Samuel Palmer country and a place I’ve visited since childhood.
This god of the forest has see many centuries and does not give up its wisdom lightly.

Editioning ‘The Guardian’
The 8th iteration of my Wanted:Dead&Alive suite of etchings

The sculptural and skeletal nature of these truncated trees within the walls of one of London’s most popular Royal Parks are often overlooked…
But not ‘The Guardian’ as it sits indomitably in front of the Pavilion Cafe at the very centre of Greenwich Park
.
Shaped by tree surgeons in a highly controlled landscape these dead and decaying trees serve as (Un)Romantic figures
.
They speak to me of my own personal geography of orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation
.
I have hopefully imbued these trees with stark, heroic qualities by putting them front and centre in a minimal and often barren landscape. In the background I have given these Stoics a chorus of supporting trees to emphasise that we are never alone in our struggles even if it often feels like it

2nd state proofs of new etchings…

Continuing the Wanted:Dead&Alive series of softground etchings. The truncated trees that populate Greenwich park are often overlooked but their skeletal and sculptural forms have been made by human intervention as well as entropic decay. They exist in a kind of purgatory waiting for the final axe (or chainsaw) but while they hold themselves high transcendence is assured.

Twisting tree, this young oak has suffered some trauma and it heartwood has hollowed as if it were an ancient with ‘galls’ forming in its minimalist branches. It’s growth in this tortured pose will continue as otherwise it is healthy and full of character.
